With over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia, interpreters are increasingly likely to encounter this topic in a variety of healthcare settings. This class offers an introduction to the most common types of dementia—including Alzheimer’s disease—as well as an overview of typical symptoms, diagnostic tools, and treatment options. We’ll also explore the unique challenges interpreters may face in memory care encounters. Participants will take part in targeted skill-building activities, including consecutive interpretation and sight translation, and leave with a curated list of resources for continued learning.
Participants will be able to:

- Name common symptoms of dementia
- Provide examples of tests that might be used in diagnosing dementia
- Identify interpreting challenges when interpreting for in encounters related to dementia and memory care, such as the use of standardized test tools such as MOCA.
- Suggest strategies for overcoming the challenges identified
