Course Description

This workshop helps trained medical interpreters gain an understanding of mental health interactions and learn to adjust their technique to fit the needs of those interactions. Topics covered include an analysis of the difference between communication in medical and mental health appointments, an introduction into what mental health practitioners are looking and listening for, development of specialized vocabulary, and adjustments of interpreting techniques to fit mental health encounters.

Cynthia E. Roat, MPH is a state-certified English<>Spanish healthcare and social service interpreter, an international consultant on language access in health care, and a veteran interpreter trainer based in Seattle. With over 30 years of experience in the field, Cindy has developed curricula for basic interpreter education as well as for many specialty areas, including genetics, palliative care, mental health, obstetrics, and dental care. Her book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is used as an ancillary text in many interpreter training programs. She is recognized nationally as a knowledgeable and dynamic instructor, whose classes are both engaging and insightful.
