As one of the fastest changing fields in medicine, genetics is a topic that is coming up more often in more healthcare settings. But highly technical vocabulary and complex medical concepts can present real challenges to interpreters who are not familiar with the concepts and vocabulary related to genetics.
This class was developed by veteran interpreter instructor Cindy Roat in collaboration with genetics experts from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics with a grant from HRSA.
This course introduces basic concepts in genetics and addresses the role of the genetic counselor, common prenatal genetic tests, how to understand results of testing, parental options based on results, and the most common genetic issues that arise in pregnancy.
