Course Description

Every year, more than 10 million men and women in the U.S. experience domestic violence. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of class, gender, race, age, disability, religion or educational background. Medical interpreters may find themselves interpreting for survivors of domestic violence in a wide variety of settings - from an emergency room to a counseling session. Interpreting in such encounters can present unique challenges to interpreters in terms of terminology, the importance of upholding the ethical principles, and vicarious trauma.

After attending this class, the participants will be able to:

  • Define domestic violence and related concepts
  • Give examples of domestic abuse
  • Explain how domestic violence affects immigrant victims
  • Discuss challenges related to interpreting for survivors of domestic violence and strategies for overcoming them
  • Practice consecutive interpreting and/or sight translation skills to integrate the new terminology and concepts
