Mastering Paraphrasing to Improve Skills in All Interpreting Modes - 9/5/2026
Paraphrasing helps interpreters accurately convey meaning and nuance while improving mental agility and quick decision-making.
The ability to paraphrase is essential for interpreters to master to be able to successfully convey a message in its entirety, including the intended meaning and all its nuances. Strong paraphrasing skills, even within one language, will help interpreters to improve their mental agility and to better make the split-second decisions involved in interpreting. In fact, paraphrasing is one of the four cognitive activities that are included on the CCHI ETOE™ (English-to-English) Interpreting exam.
This presentation will introduce the participants to the concrete sub-skills involved in paraphrasing and provide multiple opportunities to practice these skills. The participants will have an opportunity to engage in guided practice of the sub-skills - such as coming up with synonyms, opposites or changing the sentence structure, and to review examples of responses to the activities performed during the practice section of the presentation.
Learning goals:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
● Demonstrate a clear understanding of key paraphrasing sub-skills, including synonym selection and sentence structure modification.
● Apply these sub-skills through guided practice activities focused on accurately restating messages.
● Analyze and refine their paraphrasing responses using examples and feedback provided during the session.
