Course Description

Medical interpreters and translators must possess a professional vocabulary that encompasses a wide variety of terms they can expect to encounter daily, as well as a sound understanding of medical concepts. There are numerous learning and professional development opportunities for both interpreters and translators – from webinars to self-paced online courses. This webinar will suggest to the participants ideas for another way of learning– using books, podcasts, and TV shows to enhance their knowledge of medical terminology and medicine in general. While TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy may be medically inaccurate, a single scene may contain dozens of medical terms, presented in context, and tied to dramatic plotlines. Podcasts related to medical topics, aimed at the public, are great sources of information presented in an entertaining manner. Books written by doctors or medical journalists contain medical knowledge and terminology in the context of case stories, which are likely to be more memorable than dry academic texts. Participants will learn how to 5 effectively use unconventional resources to learn medical terminology – and share their favorite resources with peers!

Learning goals:

● Participants will learn the principles of effective vocabulary learning

● Participants will be introduced to a wide variety or resources for extracting medical terminology such as books, podcasts, and TV shows

● Participants will learn several ways of engaging with medical terminology from the above resources
